Sewage, birdlife and florentines

Sue promised that Bookclub this Wednesday would have elements of birds, politics, trials, a lion cub and perhaps a hippo, but we would start with sewage and end with the traditional florentines. So, over a glass of Darling's finest, Dave gave us a far too short account of the early days of the birder's Mecca, Strandfontein Wastewater Treatment plant. In the eighties, Dave and other far-sighted citizens had to persuade an intractable Scot that the people of Cape Town needed birds just as much as they needed to have a good sh-one-t, and the rest, as they say, is history. The area is now an integral part of the False Bay Ecology Park.
The tantalizing new books on offer took care of the politics, trials (and I managed to nab this book!) and the lion cub but I wasn't too sure where the hippo came in. Perhaps hiding in the reeds of Zeekoevlei?
Then is was out with the divine florentines, delish quiches and some flower pots with a difference. This is Tux who also came to the party. Thanks Sue for a fantastic evening!
