An August pile of books

Another Zoom meeting for August as winter and Covid plod on - but a wonderful selection of books from Joan to while away the wintry, isolating days. The first two include a mystery about a little girl found floating but alive in the Thames one Victorian day and a novel about a depressed woman who tries to take her life but instead of it flashing before her eyes, she gets to choose a life to live again by opening one of possible lives in the books of the midnight library. All the young men is a true story of a woman who devotes her life to AIDS sufferers. Inside the Belly of the Beast is an account by former Bosasa boss turned whistle blower about the ANC's shenanigans and state capture that comes highly recommended, and the final book Wildwood: A Journey through Trees sounds like a great antidote to the enormity of human greed, corruption and cruelty. In the wonderful tradition of English nature writers, it has been described as part pastoral adventure and part travel book. Happy reading!

Hopefully next meeting will be a real life get-together in Heather's garden, weather and Covid permitting.
