The Cape Town Book Fair is on this weekend. I have mixed feelings about these events.
My main gripe is why do I have to pay R60 to go and browse round book stalls when I can do the same in city bookshops for free? Then, last time I went, my parking fee in the underground parking was more than the price of my ticket. What a rip-off.
But the blurb on the Internet page promises "A three-day extravaganza of literary launches, discussions, information and entertainment for booklovers and publishing professionals alike. With a huge selection of events, both trade and consumer, over the three days, the Fair is a booklovers paradise." Browsing through the programme, the word "awesome" occurred just once too often for me. 'Fraid I am not venturing in this year.
OMG, am I a grumpy old woman?
